Scholarship Bios

Derek Manwill of Springfield, Oregon is a Junior at Oregon State University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. “Receiving this scholarship will allow me to perform at my highest level, and it will give me assurance that I can still achieve my educational, financial, and career goals,” says Derek, who is receiving his second Schweiger Scholarship. His goal is to one day lead a successful consulting engineering firm. Derek has received Presidential, College of Engineering Dean’s, and the American Council of Engineering Companies of Oregon Scholarships. He also participates in the American Society of Civil Engineers – Pedestrian Bridge Service Project, and the OSU Cycling and Triathlon Clubs.

Eric Nolan of Yamhill, Oregon is a Sophomore at George Fox University, where he plans to receive his Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and continue on to earn a Master’s Degree in the same field. Eric worked as an intern at Advanced American last summer. He designed and implemented an inventory system for tool and equipment storage, he hopes to make a career designing even more efficient tools and equipment, from diesel powered pumps to hydraulic jacks. The two time Schweiger Scholarship winner says, “While not every target may be reached, the importance of the effort and the experience is reward enough.” This year his scholarship is being sponsored by Oregon Iron Works of Clackamas, Oregon, who will also be providing Eric with a valuable internship this summer. Eric received a Science Scholarship and a Miller/Leadership Award from George Fox University, where he works as a Mechanical Engineering Program Lab Assistant.

Quinn Pullen of Corvallis, Oregon is a Junior at Oregon State University and expects to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 2009. After gaining practical experience with an engineering firm and getting his license, Quinn hopes to start his own firm, specializing in small business and residential construction. Quinn is interested in alternative building materials such as cob, adobe, rammed-earth and straw bales, saying that they can potentially be made as strong as conventional materials at a much lower cost. Quinn is receiving his second Schweiger Scholarship. In addition to earning a position on the OSU honor roll, he finds time to participate in the ASCE Steel Bridge Competition, OSU’s Craft Center in woodworking, the Sailing Team, and as the bass player for “Oxbow Drive.”

Alison Tanaka of Cove, Oregon is a Sophomore at Oregon State University. After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and an Honors Baccalaureate degree, Alison plans on pursuing a Master’s degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering. “I have always been told that experience is the best education in this field, and I know that a healthy relationship between designers and contractors is essential for the success of a project.” Alison also recognizes the benefits of participating in extracurricular activities at OSU. “As President of the Panhellenic Council, I am required to govern almost 1,000 women on a daily basis; it is an amazing learning opportunity that I would never have experienced had it not been for scholarships.” Alison is receiving her second Schweiger Scholarship.

Jessica Hamilton of Battle Ground, Washington is a Sophomore at the University of Portland, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, Jessica plans on going on to graduate school in transportation or environmental engineering. She recognizes the connection between engineering and construction and, as a civil engineer, hopes to strengthen the relationship to “make living in our community more enjoyable, safe, and successful for all citizens.” Jessica is in the University of Portland’s Honors Program and a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. She also participates in the Society of Women Engineers Club and Peer Tutoring with engineering students on academic probation.

Eryn Kelley of Enterprise, Oregon is a Junior at Oregon State University in Construction Engineering Management. She says she enjoys applying the mix of business and engineering skills that she is learning. “As President of the Associated General Contractors OSU Student Chapter, I am building a great base for communication and technical skills that I will one day require.” She also serves as an Ambassador for the College of Engineering. About her first Schweiger Scholarship, Eryn says, “I can tell that the Schweiger Memorial Scholarship Fund believes in our youth and the opportunity that lies ahead of them.” Eryn is also a Diversity Achievement and a John Stanley Fisk Scholar.

Jessica Young of Amity, Oregon is a Junior, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in the Construction Engineering Management program at Oregon State University. Jessica grew up around construction helping her dad with the family’s excavation company. After graduation, Jessica plans on earning a Professional Engineer and Professional Survey License. She would like to focus on helping design and build structures that will help alleviate people’s worries about natural disasters. Jessica participates in OSU’s Student Alumni Association, Polk County Search and Rescue, and Associated General Contractors, OSU Chapter.

James “Howie” Mole, Jr. of Prineville, Oregon is a Senior at Crook County High School. He plans to attend Linfield and study engineering, design and business to have a “combination of both the field construction and the construction management sides of the industry.” Howie says, “My family has a storied background in heavy marine construction, and I am extremely proud of the fact that both of my parents have worked for Advanced American…This scholarship represents more than just the financial piece; it is in remembrance of Forrest and now Konrad.” He is in Who’s Who Among American High School Students and the National Honor Society, an All American Scholar, and on the Academic Honor Roll. For four years, Howie has also been a Three Sport Scholar Athlete in Football, Wrestling and Rodeo. “I believe the true measure of a man, is that which he leaves behind. I have grown up hearing stories about Konrad and Kent, and what they left as a mark in a tough industry with a shared dream, hard work, good family and friends and I hope to have this as a goal for myself as well.”

Ryan Boone of Albany, Oregon is a Junior in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University. Originally a mechanical engineering student, Ryan says, “My experiences at Oregon State have provided me a short trip down each pathway of civil engineering, and I have chosen to pursue a career as a civil/construction engineer.” Ryan is receiving his third Schweiger Scholarship and worked as an intern at Advanced American last summer. He is involved in volunteer activities like American Society of Civil Engineers surveying project. Ryan also received an OSU Presidential Scholarship and is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Brian Lindgren of Ketchikan, Alaska is a Senior at Ketchikan High School and plans on attending the University of Idaho, majoring in civil engineering. In addition to an impressive academic record, Brian says learning to operate recreational boats has taught him responsibility and problem-solving skills, playing baseball and basketball has given him leadership skills, and summer work at a Ketchikan floatplane company has provided valuable work experience. After college graduation, he would like to return to Alaska and work to improve the economy of Southeast Alaska by designing new docks, roads and rail systems. Brian also volunteers as a mentor in his high school’s Class Act Program, which helps incoming freshmen become acclimated and involved in the school.

Jennifer Lanzetti of Meridian, Idaho is a Junior at Boise State University, seeking a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management. After graduation, Jennifer hopes to work for a large corporation internationally to help communities rebuild from natural catastrophes and employing greener building practices. Ultimately Jennifer hopes to own a construction company. At Boise State, Jennifer is the House Leader for the Boise Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, an officer in the Boise State Chapter of the AGC, Captain of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Regional Design Build Competition, and tutors Boise State students in algebra and calculus.

Marcus Miller of North Manchester, Indiana is a Sophomore at Washington State University, pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. “My desire to own a design-build firm comes from looking at elaborate buildings, such as hospitals, and seeing myself enjoying the lead role of integrating many people’s efforts in the design and construction of the building.” After graduation, Marcus plans to go on to get a Master’s degree in structural engineering, obtain his PE, and to work as a structural engineer. At Washington State, Marcus is the Activities Coordinator for the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a member of the Intramural Dodgeball Team, and a Peer-to-Peer Tutor.
