Project Description
The Company was awarded the contract to rehabilitate the bascule lift span of the Burnside Bridge, constructed in 1926. The work involved removal and replacement of the concrete deck and the counterweight trunnion bearings on the east leaf. To replace the bearings, a pin was encased in concrete at the center of the hinge, then the 3.8 million pound concrete counterweight was raised and lowered on a hydraulic jacking system. Compensating with water ballast at the tip was required in order to avoid tipping the balance of the bridge during this work. Additionally, each leaf's mechanical drive was rehabilitated with new motors, bearing liners, and brakes. Other work included new steel stringers, seismic reinforcement, and lead paint abatement and structural coating.
